In March 2024, the Healey-Driscoll Administration launched a transformative initiative to support families living in Emergency Assistance shelters by connecting them with resettlement agencies to secure stable housing and employment. As one of eight agencies partnering with the Commonwealth, JFS has already helped over 30 families move out of the shelter system and into homes of their own.
For many, the journey to stability has been long and challenging. Mayrel, a single mother of three children under twelve, spent nearly two years in an Emergency Assistance shelter in the Greater Boston area. When she finally signed a lease for a townhouse in public housing this January—with JFS by her side every step of the way—her relief was immeasurable. Thanks to our dedicated team and volunteers, Mayrel not only secured safe and stable housing but also received essential furnishings, a refrigerator, and other necessities to help her family settle in comfortably. Best of all, her children could remain in their familiar school, minimizing disruption during this major transition.
Mayrel’s story is just one of many. Right now, more families are preparing to move out of the shelter system—and they need your help. Volunteers are essential in making this transition smoother, from helping set up homes with furniture and basic necessities to offering mentorship and employment support.
