Help a Child Start the School Year with Confidence

Dear Friends and Supporters of JFS,

Though summer is just beginning, JFS is already thinking about the urgent needs that the families we serve will face as they begin the new school year. For many of us, the end of summer brings back childhood memories of the first day of school: bright white sneakers, the smell of a freshly sharpened pencil or a newly opened box of crayons, maybe even a special first-day outfit.

But for many children in our community, going back to school can bring anxiety. Their families cannot afford the long list of required school supplies, and if they can, it often means making other difficult choices in their monthly budget.

The gap between what children need and what many families in our community can provide is where JFS steps in.

For the past 15 years, JFS has run an annual backpack drive, providing more than 5,000 backpacks to students in Framingham Public Schools (FPS) and other children in need across the Metrowest community.

Last August, hundreds of individuals and families came together across three community “Build-A–Backpack” events to pack hundreds of backpacks. The filled backpacks were then distributed through the JFS/FPS Resource Room, which supports the academic, social, and basic needs of immigrant and low-income children in Framingham.

Each fully stocked backpack costs approximately $50, and we know the need will be greater than ever this year. I am writing to ask you to sponsor a backpack – or five or ten – to ensure that every child in our community begins the school year with the supplies and confidence they need to succeed.

Please consider a gift of $50, $100, $250, or even $500 to help vulnerable students start the year off on the right foot.

Thank you for your generous consideration and wishing you a safe and enjoyable summer season.

Sincerely,

Ian Rubin, Board President          Lino Covarrubias, CEO

P.S. In Framingham, more than 2,000 children under age 18 live in poverty. Will you help those children begin the school year smiling with pride and carrying a new backpack full of supplies?
