Creating safer and more inclusive communities requires all of us to remain informed, speak out against hate and know where to turn when an incident occurs.
The resources below can help individuals, families, educators and community organizations learn more, report incidents and identify ways to take meaningful action.
JFS Committee on Anti-Racism and Fighting Antisemitism
In 2020, JFS established the Committee on Anti-Racism and Fighting Antisemitism to develop long-term strategies to address hate, discrimination and bigotry and advance social equity and inclusion throughout our community. The committee brought together JFS leaders with faith leaders, educators and community partners, reflecting the belief that confronting hate requires collaboration across communities.
The committee’s work helped strengthen JFS’s commitment to education, community partnership and action, including efforts to equip people with the knowledge and tools to recognize and respond to racism, antisemitism, bias and other forms of hate.

Anti-Defamation League (ADL)
ADL accepts reports of antisemitism, extremism, bias, bigotry and identity-based hate or discrimination. Reports help ADL identify trends and, when possible, connect individuals and communities with support and resources.

Move from Bystander to Active Bystander
Active Bystander Training gives people practical strategies for recognizing potentially harmful situations, considering their options and responding safely.
JFS has a long history of supporting Active Bystander Training in Metrowest, including early partnerships with Quabbin Mediation and Open Spirit, which helped bring the Training Active Bystanders model to our community.
Inspired by JFS founder and Holocaust survivor Max Michelson (z”l), who urged others to “ACT! Don’t be a silent bystander,” this work reflects the belief that each of us can play a role in creating safer and more inclusive communities.

Responding to Hate Online
Hate and harassment can occur online as well as in person.
If you experience or witness online hate:
- Prioritize your personal safety
- Save relevant screenshots, posts, usernames, dates and links
- Use the platform’s reporting tools when appropriate
- Preserve documentation of threats or harassment
- Report antisemitic, bias-based or discriminatory incidents to ADL
- Contact law enforcement when there is a credible threat of violence or immediate danger

Building a Community That Stands Against Hate
JFS has a longstanding commitment to bringing community leaders and partners together to confront antisemitism, racism, discrimination and bigotry.
This work has included community education, Active Bystander Training, partnerships with faith and advocacy organizations, engagement with young people and efforts to respond when emerging events threaten the safety or dignity of our neighbors.
Combating hate requires more than opposing it in principle. It requires communities that are informed, connected and prepared to act.
