For many living outside metro Boston, reliable transportation isn’t just a convenience—it’s a lifeline. Without it, everyday necessities like commuting to work, buying groceries, or getting to medical appointments can become overwhelming challenges. For low-income individuals, especially newly arrived refugees, not having a vehicle often means facing barriers to stability and independence.
Since 2022, JFS has partnered with Second Chance Cars (SCC) to remove those barriers. Through this collaboration, donated and refurbished vehicles are placed in the hands of hardworking adults who need them most. These cars empower individuals to keep or obtain jobs, support their families, and build brighter futures. To be recommended for a car, a person must be an established client of JFS and meet SCC’s eligibility requirements.
Recently, JFS and SCC worked together to provide vehicles to two client families: one from Cuba, who arrived in the U.S. in August 2024, and another from Afghanistan, who resettled here in November 2024. For both families, access to transportation means the opportunity to take on second jobs, increase household income, and strengthen their path toward financial well-being and self-sufficiency.
More Than Cars: Tools for Transformation
This partnership represents more than just a set of car keys—it symbolizes a turning point. Each donated vehicle becomes a tool for transformation, helping families reach jobs and opportunities they would otherwise struggle to access. JFS is proud to stand alongside SCC in giving hardworking clients the means to achieve their goals and secure greater independence.
