Sometimes, building a stronger community begins with something as simple as saying hello.

Each year, Good Neighbor Day reminds us of the important role we can all play in creating communities where people feel seen, valued, and connected. National Good Neighbor Day is officially recognized on September 28, and this year, Massachusetts is extending the celebration from September 25–29—giving communities across the Commonwealth a full weekend to come together, strengthen connections, and foster a greater sense of belonging.

The theme of Massachusetts Good Neighbor Day 2026 is “It Starts With Hello!” It is a simple message with an important call to action: each of us has the power to help someone feel less alone.

Be Part of a More Connected Community

At JFS, we see every day how meaningful human connection can make a difference, particularly for older adults.

As people age, changes in health, mobility, transportation, family circumstances, and social networks can make it more difficult to stay connected. An older adult who once regularly spent time with friends, attended community activities, or traveled independently may gradually find themselves spending more time alone.

That is why being a good neighbor matters.

A phone call. A friendly conversation. A ride to a medical appointment. An invitation to participate. Even a simple hello can remind someone that they are part of a community that cares.

Good Neighbor Day challenges all of us to turn those small gestures into a habit—not only for one day, but throughout the year.

How Will You Be a Good Neighbor?

There are many ways to participate. You might introduce yourself to someone new in your neighborhood, check in on an older neighbor, invite someone to join you for coffee or a walk, lend a hand with an everyday task, or simply take a few minutes to have a conversation.

You can also make a difference by volunteering with JFS.

JFS offers several ways to connect with and support older adults in our community:

Whether you have a few hours to give or are looking for an ongoing way to become involved, there are opportunities to make meaningful connections through JFS.
