October 2023 started the second session of the JFS/ Rashi Learning & Leadership Council. The JFS-Rashi Learning and Leadership Council consists of middle school students from The Rashi School. Students were selected to serve on the council for one year with quarterly modules. Each module consists of leadership skills training, with a Jewish learning component.

JFSs Goals for Students in the JFS-Rashi Learning and Leadership Council:

Leadership: To further develop effective leadership skills to take on roles within their communities and beyond, and to expand experiential learning opportunities in support of student empowerment, voice, and social action

Network: To develop a network of peers in an effort to learn, lead, and engage in social justice programming and to gain global awareness

Inspiration: To be inspired by change-makers and recipients of services in order to continue engaging in social justice throughout their lives high school, college and beyond

There were 40 Rashi students that attended the first meeting of the new year to listen to many impactful speakers from The Shapiro Foundation. Ed Shapiro, Samantha Shapiro, and Larry Tobin spoke about identifying problems and how to safely engage and find solutions. Even the smallest actions can have an impact on your friends, neighbors, family, and community in a positive way. They also touched upon how people are being forced to leave their homes and the desperate need for help at this time. All three speakers from The Shapiro Foundation, touched upon their time attending the Rashi School and how it helped shape them into the people they are today. The Rashi Learning and Leadership Council is an important part of developing the skills to be a leader in the community and beyond!

Thank you to Rashi and The Shapiro Foundation for a great start to the second year of the JFS/ Rashi Learning and Leadership Council!
