In the spirit of welcoming the stranger and JFS’ commitment to creating an inclusive, compassionate community, we invite you to join us for a special conversation with author Eric Silberstein about his acclaimed novel In Berlin.
The book follows Anna Werner, a software engineer whose life is upended by a sudden spinal stroke. Struggling with uncertain prospects, she forms an unlikely bond with Batul al-Jaberi, a Syrian immigrant and aspiring doctor working as a hospital janitor. Together, they inspire each other – Anna finding strength in recovery, and Batul reclaiming her dreams. But their friendship is tested when Batul must choose between family loyalty and her commitment to Anna.
This poignant story highlights resilience, friendship, and the courage to believe in one another. It also reflects timeless Jewish values of compassion, justice, and welcoming the stranger – reminding us of the ways we strengthen our community when we open our hearts to others.
