In the spirit of welcoming the stranger and in alignment with JFS’ commitment to fostering an inclusive and compassionate community, we were honored to host author Eric Silberstein for a deeply meaningful Conversations & Coffee event centered on his acclaimed novel In Berlin.

Held recently at Temple Beth Shalom in Needham, the morning brought together over 55 attendees who gathered to enjoy a light continental breakfast and engage in thoughtful conversation about the themes woven throughout Silberstein’s novel.

In Berlin follows the journey of Anna Werner, a software engineer whose life is unexpectedly transformed after a sudden spinal stroke. Amid her physical and emotional uncertainty, she forms a powerful and unlikely bond with Batul al-Jaberi, a Syrian immigrant and aspiring doctor working as a hospital janitor. Their connection becomes a lifeline – Anna finding strength and resilience in her recovery, and Batul rediscovering her own dreams. Yet their friendship is challenged when Batul faces a wrenching choice between loyalty to her family and her commitment to Anna.

As Silberstein shared his insights and reflections, the conversation—guided by his friend and beta reader Runa Islam— illuminated the novel’s poignant themes of resilience, friendship, moral courage, and the belief we place in one another. The story echoes timeless Jewish values of compassion, justice, and welcoming the stranger, reminding us of the profound ways our communities grow stronger when we open our hearts.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to our dedicated event committee – Michelle Bearak, Jodi Bring, Jessica Myers, Helene Gelber, Jenifer Drucker, Stephanie Elkind, and Mara Sherman – for their leadership and hard work in making this event such a success.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for a morning of learning, connection, and community-building. We look forward to many more opportunities to come together and continue these meaningful conversations.
