Each March, we celebrate National Social Work Month—a time to recognize the professionals who dedicate their lives to helping individuals, families, and communities overcome challenges and thrive. First established in 1963, this month serves as an opportunity to build public support for the profession and highlight the extraordinary impact of those working in social services every day.
At its core, social work is about empowering people, strengthening communities, and advancing social justice. Whether through counseling, advocacy, case management, or program development, these professionals share a common mission: to support those who are vulnerable and help create pathways to stability and opportunity.
The Many Faces of Social Work
Social work is not one role—it is a collective effort across disciplines.
It includes:
- Social workers providing clinical care and advocacy
- Care managers guiding older adults and families through complex systems
- Case managers connecting individuals to essential resources
- Human service professionals developing and delivering critical programs
Together, these professionals form a network of care that touches nearly every part of our community. They are often on the front lines, addressing issues such as poverty, mental health, displacement, aging, and crisis response—meeting people where they are and helping them move forward.
Uplifting, Defending, Transforming
The 2026 National Association of Social Workers theme, “Social Workers: Uplift. Defend. Transform.”, captures the essence of this work.
- Uplift: Offering compassion, connection, and hope in moments of uncertainty
- Defend: Advocating for dignity, access, and equity for all
- Transform: Driving meaningful change—both in individual lives and across systems
These principles are not just ideas—they are lived out every day by professionals who show up, often in the most difficult circumstances, to make a difference.
Living the Mission Every Day
At JFS, these values are brought to life through the dedication of staff and volunteers who support individuals and families facing complex challenges. From helping someone navigate a crisis to building long-term stability, their work reflects a deep commitment to compassion, dignity, and community.
This work is not easy. It requires resilience, empathy, and an unwavering belief in the potential of every person. It often happens quietly, behind the scenes—but its impact is profound.
