As part of the National Good Neighbor Day movement, Governor Maura Healey has officially proclaimed September 28, 2024, “Good Neighbor Day” across Massachusetts. This movement invites each of us to take an active role in “cultivating positive neighborly relations to create vibrant and thriving communities” and “reminds us that our individual and collective well-being requires a commitment from each of us to take small steps to build social connections in our communities”.

At JFS we are committed to offering programs and services that support our community’s most vulnerable members. For many people, as they age and develop health conditions that limit their ability to get out and enjoy time with friends and other social activities, they find themselves increasingly isolated and lonely, which can lead to worsening physical and mental health. This phenomenon is so prevalent across the country that the Surgeon General has declared social isolation and loneliness a pubic health crisis, particularly among older adults.

The Good Neighbor movement challenges each of us to be part of the solution to this growing problem. Caring about our neighbors is not a new idea, but the isolation that persists due to the COVID pandemic, and our increasing focus on communication through technology rather than face to face interaction, have changed the dynamics of community engagement and it is easy to forget that not everyone can easily or successfully adapt.

Join the movement and be part of the solution. Not sure how to begin? Volunteer with JFS!

It only takes a little time to put a smile on the face of an older adult who needs to feel a sense of belonging, needs to feel that they are not alone and that someone cares for their well-being. JFS offers many ways for you to be a “Good Neighbor” to an older adult in need:

Commit to being a “Good Neighbor” and join the JFS family of volunteers – there are opportunities that work with every schedule.
